The Best of IDS
Each year, the Vancouver design community gathers together to celebrate great design, see old friends and make new acquaintances during the Interior Design Show held at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Most importantly though, we gather to discover the amazing artisans creating beautiful, innovative products within our community and across Canada. Read on for our favorite brands, products, and craftspeople from this year’s show which wrapped up this past Sunday.
Lock and Mortice

We’ve loved this brand for many years, and they continue to deliver with high-quality, classic, minimal pieces that are meant to be loved for generations. Their use of materials like solid oak, maple, and walnut and locally quarried stone speaks directly to my design ethos.
Atelier Dimo
Not new but new to me this year, Atelier Dimo caught my eye with their Nikole coffee tables in the Montauk Sofa booth. Later in the show I found their own booth and fell in love with their Danish modernism and materiality.
Mike Randall Design
I met Mike Randall a couple of years ago, but his display with Atelier Dimo this year was a show stopper. Based in Victoria, BC, Mike specializes in wood-bending to create visually stunning furniture and lighting pieces. I also love his commitment to sustainability and healthy, nontoxic materials.
Jacob Antoni Design
Born in Germany and with Italian roots, Jacob currently creates his innovative designs in Abbotsford, BC. Specializing in detailed woodworking, it was his Transforma chandelier that caught my attention at the show. This articulated chandelier can be expanded or contracted to form a variety of different shapes resembling sacred geometry.
TAV Ceramics
I met Tanvi, the maker behind TAV Ceramics, at this year’s show and was blown away by the beauty and design of her collection which features lighting and vessels. Each piece is handmade in her studio and the glaze options are all gorgeous and quite relevant to today’s design aesthetic.
Masana Stone
While I’ve known and loved Masana Stone for years, they continue to impress me with their innovation and growth. Founded by Ramon Masana, they create custom fireplace mantels, hearths, and surrounds so you can create nearly any concept that you can dream up. They also have over 100 neoclassical stone moulds from Ramon’s hometown of Mexico City. This year they’ve added tables, sinks, and custom millwork to their offerings.
Supply Interior Products
A new-to-me showroom from Winnipeg, Supply represents a carefully curated collection of interior finishes with a focus on sustainability and natural materials. Each line that they represent is intentional in its selection, from Tyndall stone to Spanish cork, and from 100% mineral paint to Tretford goat hair carpet. Their handcrafted Flora Tiles in glazed ceramic and terracotta are absolutely stunning.
Hush Acoustics
While acoustic panels are more of a commercial design product and I focus on residential design, Hush’s booth dramatically demonstrated the effectiveness and impact of their product. After a few hours in a noisy, busy convention hall, their booth, with small alcoves and passageways lined in their products, provided a welcomed respite from the rest of the trade show. I could see this product being used in many different applications. Add to it their dedication to sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and cultural diversity, and I’m on board!
Honorable Mention: Ben Barber Studio
While Ben Barber did not have a booth at the show, his studio is based in Vancouver and he is one of the most notable furniture makers in our area. I fell in love with Ben’s furniture while sourcing furniture for a Hawaii project at the Future Perfect in LA. At the time I had no idea he was based in Vancouver; I was just drawn to the craftsmanship and materiality of natural stone, brass, bronze, and solid wood. He sets a high bar for everyone else to aim for!
