Quiet Luxury: you may have heard this term recently, particularly in terms of fashion. Typically, this style of dressing includes soft neutrals like beige and grey, high quality natural materials like cashmere, wool, linen, and silk, and is devoid of labels and monogram prints traditionally associated with luxury brands. It is timeless, sophisticated, and understated. Vogue describes it as “less austere than minimalism but more polished than ‘normcore.’” There is an emphasis on making thoughtful purchases of quality, timeless investment pieces that will last (and will remain in style) for decades. Fashion brands that exemplify this aesthetic include The Row, Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, MaxMara, Loewe, Khaite, Celine, and Hermès.

The quiet luxury aesthetic translates easily into interior spaces. In terms of interior design, this approach is all about understated elegance, comfort, quality, and relaxation. The goal is to create a space that is luxurious and classically stylish, but also calming and welcoming. Colin King has this to say about creating quiet luxury interiors: “It pushes us to examine how we look at fabrication and manufacturing, how we source materials, and ultimately, gives us a runway to be more creative and ask ourselves ‘how do we create pieces that we will have for a lifetime?’” He adds, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

To achieve this look, I use natural materials such as solid wood, natural stone, cast bronze, and handwoven linen. These materials not only add beauty and durability to the space but also help create a connection to nature, which is a key element of this trend. I suggest incorporating these materials in furniture, flooring, hardware, and decor to create a cohesive look.

Neutral colors are also a key component of the quiet luxury style. Soft shades of gray, beige, and white create a soothing and calming atmosphere in the space and are timeless shades that never go out of style. Textures such as wool, cashmere, and silk can also be used to add depth and interest to the design.

In terms of furniture and accessories, I select simple and understated pieces that are high-quality and well-crafted. Materiality, intention, and functionality should be the focus, rather than flashy or showy designs. Tailored upholstery, timeless casegoods and millwork, soft and textural pillows and throws, handmade pottery and woodwork and breezy window coverings can all be used to create a warm and inviting space.

One important aspect of the quiet luxury trend is the desire for a calm and relaxing environment. In our fast-paced, tech-driven world, people are increasingly seeking ways to create a sense of tranquility in their homes. As an interior designer, I believe the quiet luxury style offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. From the use of quality pieces that minimize synthetic and toxic materials to the restful colour palettes that promote improved mental health, this aesthetic is well suited to a serene and comforting space.

Here are 6 ways I create quiet luxury interior spaces:

1. FOCUS ON MATERIALS

Use natural materials such as wood, stone, bronze, and linen to add a touch of nature to your space. Incorporate these materials in furniture, flooring, hardware, and decor to create a cohesive look.

2. YOUR COLOR PALETTE IS IMPORTANT

Choose neutral colors such as soft shades of gray, beige, and white to create a soothing and calming atmosphere in the space.

3. USE TEXTURES TO ADD VARIETY AND INTEREST

Use textures such as wool, cashmere, silk, linen, and grasscloth to add depth and richness to the design. Incorporate these textures in rugs, throw pillows, wallcoverings, window coverings, and blankets.

4. CRAFTSMANSHIP IS KEY

Invest in high-quality, well-crafted furniture that is timeless, tailored, and understated. Comfort and functionality should be the focus, rather than flashy or showy designs.

5. USE MIXED LIGHTING SOURCES

Soft, ambient lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere. Avoid harsh, bright lights that can be jarring to the senses.

6. BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT DÉCOR AND ACCESSORIES

Use artwork and décor selectively, focusing on pieces that are calming and understated. Avoid clutter and opt for simplicity and character instead.

Overall, the quiet luxury trend is all about creating a space that feels luxurious, but also comfortable and welcoming. By focusing on natural materials, subtle textures, and understated design, this style offers a peaceful and calming oasis in the midst of a busy world.
